Rules

A fight. Three rounds. Each round Tom gags on screen, the announcer counts down, and at GAG you get exactly three seconds to copy him. Both players start with 100 life. The lower score loses life equal to the gap. At zero it is a K.O.; otherwise more life after three rounds wins.

Scoring. Every take scores 0 to 100: your voice counts 70, your face 20 and how loud you gag 10. Sound like Tom (his sound, his rhythm, his length) and pull the face he pulls. Gag out loud: a quiet gag scores less, one that is too quiet scores nothing, and the face only counts in full with a real gag behind it. Keep your face in the camera: out of view, it scores nothing. No camera that works? You can play by voice alone; your face then scores zero. If your gag comes out more like a groan, a cough or a burp, your voice still counts half.

No recordings. Gag live, with your own voice, on your own camera and microphone. Playing a recording is not allowed: Tom’s, anyone else’s, or one of your own earlier takes. When one is detected, that take scores −30 and both players see “Recording detected”. Three in a day and you sit out for 24 hours. Software cameras and microphones can’t be used.

Keep it comfortable. Copy the sound with your voice. Don’t make yourself actually gag, and stop if it hurts.

Titles. Every judged take earns one: Dry mouth (1 to 29), Throat tickler (30 to 49), Dry heaver (50 to 64), Retcher (65 to 79), Gag master (80 to 89), Tom’s apprentice (90 to 94), Tom-level (95 to 100). The winner of a fight is the Gag King; the loser choked.

Rank. Every month is a season, and everyone starts it at 0 points. Only fights with strangers (Find an opponent) count. A win earns 7 to 27 points and a loss costs 7 to 27: beating someone with more points than you earns the most, losing to someone with fewer costs the most, and an even fight is worth 11. Points add up, so whoever wins most, and most often, climbs highest. Fights with a friend, with someone on your network, or a fourth fight in a day with the same player don’t count, and a fight against someone still in their first five fights moves yours half as far. Leaving a fight once it has started is a loss. The ranks: Peasant (under 0), Squire (0), Knight (25), Baron (75), Count (150), Duke (300), Prince (600); among Princes, the top 50 are Royal and the top 10 are Pearl. One ranked fight puts your name on the season board. Fight Tom. Practice: three rounds against Tom, who gets tougher as your rank goes up. It never changes your rank and never goes on the rankings; only your own win streak is kept.

18+ for fights with strangers. No sexual content, no harassment, no minors on camera. Use Report to leave and send the fight to the site owner.

What is kept. Your three seconds of audio are scored on this server and thrown away; nothing is recorded or used for training. Your camera picture never leaves your device except, in fights with people, directly to your opponent, and as one still picture if your opponent reports you (it goes to the site owner with the fight’s chat); each take sends only a few numbers describing your expression. To catch recordings, a short code made from each judged take (it cannot be turned back into sound) is kept for seven days, and detected recordings are noted for 30 days. A scrambled form of your network address is kept for 30 days so that fights on one network stay unranked. Scores stay in the monthly and weekly boards for 30 days; each player's best and each gag's top ten remain for the all-time board. Your rank is kept with a random code in a cookie on this browser, or with your ScaTube account when you are signed in. The face picture on the result screen stays in your browser; a saved result image shows only your own face.

Credits. Announcer and punches: Kenney (kenney.nl), CC0. Bell, crowd, drum roll and the rest of the ring sounds: CC0 recordings from Freesound (freesound.org). Tom’s gags: Tom Pearl.
